Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate whether managers of Japanese firms that adopt international financial reporting standards (IFRS) engage in earnings management by shifting core expenses to reported discontinued operations. Based on this purpose, the author also investigates the impact of continuing operations reporting on core earnings.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses regression analysis mainly using the expected-core-earnings model (McVay, 2006) on a sample of Japanese firms adopting IFRS. The sample consists of 317 firm-year observations representing 48 Japanese firms that adopted IFRS from 2010 to 2018, noting that Japan has adopted IFRS since 2010.
Findings
The author finds that firms shift operating expenses of continuing operations to discontinued operations to increase core earnings. Additionally, the author desegregates reported discontinued operations into core and non-core earnings because previous literature assumes that firms engage in classification shifting using special items. Results reveal that firms use the classification shifting using negative non-core earnings of discontinued operations. Furthermore, the income-increasing discontinued operations negatively influence both current and future core earnings while income-decreasing discontinued operations do not.
Research limitations/implications
The result could rely on the efficiency of the expected core earnings model. The author intentionally use only the Japanese sample rather than a global sample to control the characteristics of each country that can be noise; it could be a bias of this study.
Practical implications
The author revealed that firms engaged in the classification shifting using negative non-core earnings of discontinued operations. Providing detailed information on discontinued operations, segmented core earnings and non-core earnings (special items) is necessary. Deficiency of details on discontinued operations can create information asymmetry between managers and investors. It can encourage managers to engage in opportunistically earnings management using discontinued operations, taking advantage of investors’ ignorance of the nature of the expenses allocated to discontinued operations.
Social implications
This study would be beneficial to investors by informing them of the potential usefulness and risks of IFRS because it is believed that IFRS is to be the predominant set of accounting standards in the world.
Originality/value
The author exposes a potential earnings management practice under IFRS by extending the literature on classification shifting through examining the relationship between unexpected core earnings and discontinued operations. The author extends prior research for classification, developing it to an investigation of the impact on core earnings, finding that income-increasing discontinued operations negatively influence core earnings, whereas income-decreasing discontinued operations do not. This study indicates that standard setters should pay close attention to the potential problems of line-item separations of discontinued operations.

The purpose of this report is to present the critical factors necessary for process improvement in pharmaceutical research.
Design/methodology/approach
Cross‐organizational process improvement projects, which can increase productivity as well as shorten cycle time in drug discovery, are used to determine the critical factors for success. A morphological analysis is conducted on these critical factors followed by KeyGraph visualization in a post‐process improvement survey.
Findings
Four scenarios, which are beneficial for process improvement, are explored through application of the KeyGraph. The critical factors identified are project scheduling, automation, resource management, and process improvement methodology. The project leaders also addressed critical factors, such as top management support, shared goals, and a data‐driven approach. The step for improvement is in alignment with the typical quality improvement process in most process improvement initiatives.
Originality/value
The identified critical factors for success provide a guide to process improvement during pharmaceutical research. In addition, the KeyGraph framework provides a practical approach to discovering the factors that contribute to success.

Abstract
Purpose
Quality management tools such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) have been implemented in various industries to improve quality. This report aims to demonstrate that FMEA can be applied as a performance improvement tool, based on case analysis of process improvement conducted for a drug discovery project.
Design/methodology/approach
The main points of the proposed FMEA process include: inclusion of an interface that makes it easy to visualize complicated processes in pharmaceutical research; identification of undesirable effects to indicate process defects; and a quantitative estimate of the undesirable effects related to quality and efficiency.
Findings
The effectiveness of the proposed FMEA process was evaluated based on in vivo screening/profiling during early drug discovery. The process targeted for improvement was visualized using a flow diagram. The undesirable effects identified included waiting, false operations, and errors in the decision‐making and reporting processes. The most serious flaws, determined by risk priority numbers for each category, were waiting and false operations.
Originality/value
The effectiveness of the proposed FMEA was demonstrated by applying the analysis to another in vivo profiling process. Quantitative evaluation of the undesirable effects determined that they were reasonable. This provides a benefit for scientists seeking to improve the drug discovery process.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze fans’ perceptions of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of a professional football club, specifically whether or not perceived CSR performances are then likely to influence patronage intentions of the fans in relation to the football club.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses the example of a professional football club in China as a case study for data analysis. Based on a sample of 451 home team fans, analysis was conducted through calculation of descriptive statistics, and exploratory factor analysis. Regression analysis was conducted to determine the impact of perceived CSR performance on fans’ patronage intentions.
Findings
The results revealed that factor 3 (“CSR to customer and employee”) and factor 4 (“Community development and youth education”) were significantly predictive of all the three patronage intention variables, i.e. repeat purchase, word-of-mouth and merchandise consumption. In addition, factor 2 (“charity”) would also affect merchandise consumption intention, but have no effect on any other dimensions.
Originality/value
A scale measuring perceived CSR performance in professional football clubs by the fans in the Chinese context has been developed. In addition, the authors have identified that the two main CSR factors that would influence fans’ patronage intentions are: “CSR to the customer and employee” and “community development and youth education.” Thus, if football clubs are to use CSR strategically to leverage spend, then it is these two areas that they should focus on, explicitly in relation to CSR activities. This paper adds value to an area that is currently under-researched in respect of CSR activities in Chinese professional football.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose and examine an integrated model of spectator satisfaction in mass participant sport events.
Design/methodology/approach
The Wuhan marathon, held in the middle of China, was selected serve for the study to examine the antecedents and consequences of spectator satisfaction at mass participant sport events. Data were collected from 956 spectators of the event on the day of the race. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the research model proposed by this study.
Findings
Structural equation modeling results indicate the following. First, the event image and perceived social impact of the event are important predictive factors of spectator satisfaction. Second, spectator satisfaction is positively associated with behavioral intentions toward the event and the sponsors' product. Third, spectator satisfaction plays a significant mediating role between the antecedents and consequences; specifically, compared to perceived social impacts of the event, event image has greater indirect effects on both event-related behavioral intentions and event sponsors' products.
Originality/value
Until now, there has not been an integrated research study on the sport spectator satisfaction model in the context of mass participant sport events. This paper thus extends the understanding of the spectator satisfaction in the context of mass participant sport events, and the findings provide valuable implications for holding cities and event organizers of mass participant sport events in emerging countries.

Abstract
Purpose
Dietary patterns have been used to explore the association between dietary factors and risk of pancreatic cancer (PC) and renal cancer (RC); however, the association remains unclear. The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review these associations.
Design/methodology/approach
Pertinent studies published prior to March 2016 were systematically searched and retrieved through PubMed and Scopus databases. Adjusted risk estimates were derived by comparing the highest with the lowest categories of dietary pattern scores and were combined by using the fixed-effects model when no substantial heterogeneity was observed; otherwise, the random-effects model was used.
Findings
A total of nine studies, five for PC (including 2,059 cases and 41,774 participants/controls) and four for RC (with 1,327 cases and 53,007 participants/controls), were included in this meta-analysis. A decreased risk of PC was shown for the highest compared with the lowest categories of the healthy dietary pattern (OR = 0.72, 95 per cent CI = 0.51-0.94, random effects (p-value for heterogeneity = 0.004)), whereas no significant association with Western dietary was observed (OR = 1.16, 95 per cent CI = 0.87-1.44, fixed effects). In the overall analysis, a significant association was found between the healthy dietary pattern and reduced risk of RC (OR = 0.59, 95 per cent CI = 0.48-0.71, fixed effects (p-value for heterogeneity = 0.459)), whereas the Western pattern was positively associated with risk of RC (OR = 1.42, 95 per cent CI = 1.14-1.69, fixed effects). For both cancers, the reduced risk associated with the healthy pattern was restricted to case-control, but not cohort, studies. Furthermore, drinking pattern was significantly related to reduced risk of RC (OR = 0.68, 95 per cent CI = 0.42-0.94).
Originality/value
To the authors’ knowledge, the present study is the first English document to summarize systematically the findings from observational studies in response to this question whether a posteriori dietary patterns are associated with susceptibility to the risk of renal and ovarian cancers.

Purpose
Changes in consumers’ awareness of interest rates (deposits and loans) are important for making financial decisions, particularly in the banking industry. However, little is known about the effect of consumer awareness on customer orientation and loyalty. The purpose of this paper is to examine how changes in consumers’ awareness of interest rates in Korea can influence customer loyalty, considering banks’ efforts to improve customer orientation. The authors explicitly rationalize the fact that consumers’ awareness of interest rates can play an important role in moderating the strength of the relationship between customer orientation and loyalty.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were collected from participants (n=327) who had made banking transactions based on their real income in Seoul. Participants mainly focused on personal loans and debts, and most people had banked with a specific bank (one of the main Korean banks) for longer than three years. The authors tested the effect of interest rates using two methodologies, namely, a field study using SEM and an experimental design.
Findings
The study tested these relationships with survey data and two simulated experiments. The findings indicated that the influence of customer orientation on customer loyalty decreased with the increase in loan interest rate awareness. Moreover, the customer orientation-loyalty link weakened with the increase in awareness of central bank base rates. Conversely, the awareness that loan rates were decreasing strengthened the relationship.
Research limitations/implications
Banks need to know the importance of periodic consultation services with valuable consumers who transact with one or more banks because changes in the consumer awareness of interest rates influence customer loyalty (or switching behavior), particularly when their awareness of loan interest rates increases.
Originality/value
This paper is, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the first to investigate the consequence of such a change in consumers’ awareness of both deposit and loan interest rates with regard to the relationship between customer orientation and loyalty.

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming, powder metallurgy and composite material processing are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for 1994‐1996, where 1,370 references are listed. This bibliography is an updating of the paper written by Brannberg and Mackerle which has been published in Engineering Computations, Vol. 11 No. 5, 1994, pp. 413‐55.
